Itinerant Theatre (IT) proudly announces that on September 8, 2018 it will co-host a second dinner theatre with St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. The evening’s theme is Louisiana Women: Leading Women. The church will prepare and present under the direction of chef Kevin Hodge a three-course dinner. IT will produce “Maggie” and “Rosa”, two one-woman plays taken from Carolyn Woosley’s 13 one-woman plays, Louisiana Women.
Location and time for the dinner theatre is the Fellowship Hall of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 4020 Hodges St., corner of Sale and Hodges Streets. Doors open at 5:30 and dinner begins at 6:00. Tickets are $40 or $300 for a table of eight.
Dinner will include a salad, choice of beef medallions over roasted golden potato or shrimp & grits. Desserts include bread pudding, chocolate mousse and crème brûlée. Drinks will be water, iced tea and coffee.
Margaret Dixon (1908 – 1970) “Maggie”, was the first managing editor of a major periodical, the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate in the USA. From 1938 until her death she covered every session of the Louisiana state legislature, with particular focus on Governor Earl Long and public access to political records. Dixon also led reform efforts at Angola Prison and treatment of mentally ill children and youth. The play’s setting is Maggie’s office, 1959.
Rosa Lucille Hart (1900-1964) “Rosa”. A budding literary intellectual, Rosa is hiliariously tricked into becoming the first woman cheerleader in the USA as she urged on Tulane University teams during WWI. Soon after Rosa returns home to Lake Charles, she cofounds and directs, in her inimitable way, the Lake Charles Little Theatre for 30 years. The play’s setting is Spring 1948 in Rosa’s bedroom as she relishes the arrival of Life Magazine’s reporter for coverage of a local production that “flopped on Broadway, but it won’t flop here!”
Louisiana Women, researched and written by Carolyn Woosley, is a composite of 13 one-woman plays about actual Louisiana women who lived between 1742 and 2007. Each play runs approximately thirty minutes. Each explores the events, issues or values of the day. In the midst of the play the actress often becomes other characters, sometimes male and sometimes of another race.
