Extraordinary, wonderful show runs April 5-8! Get tickets now!

Greetings, all. Itinerant Theatre is proud and privileged to produce Ntozake Shange’s Pulitzer prize-winning play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf !    The performances are exuberant and penetrating.  The words are, well, let’s let the New York Times speak:  “…Ntozake Shange writes with such exquisite care and beauty that anyone can relate to her message.”  The NYT later said “…encompassing…every feeling and experience a woman has ever had.”

Performance times vary, so, choose your day carefully, and remember, the show runs only one long weekend:       April 5-8 in the Ben Mount Theatre of Central School A&H Building, 809 Kirby St., downtown Lake Charles.

Showtimes:  (1)  Thursday, April 5, 7:00pm.  (2)  Friday, April 6, 8:30pm after the opening of the Black Heritage Gallery’s opening 6:00-8:00pm on 2nd floor of Central School. (We discount your theatre ticket if you attend the opening!)    (3) Saturday, April 7, 7:00pm, and, (4)  Sunday, April 8, 3:00pm matinee.

Tickets are $15/ $12.50 seniors (65+)/ $10 students of any age.  Buy tickets at the door or at this website.  Reserve tickets at 337-436-6275, and be sure that you arrive 15 minutes early to pay for reserved tickets.  In the event the house is full, and you are not there 15 minutes early to claim your tickets,  we will release your reservation.

The show runs 90 minutes.  There is no intermission.

 Itinerant Theatre will present For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf by Ntozake Shange April 5 and 7 @ 7pm, April 6 @ 8:30 pm following the Black Heritage Gallery opening, and Sunday April 8 @ 3pm in Ben Mount Theatre of Central School, 809 Kirby St. This groundbreaking “choreopoem” is a spellbinding collection of vivid prose and free verse narratives about and performed by black women. Capturing the brutal, tender and dramatic lives of contemporary Black women, For Colored Girls… offers a transformative, riveting evening of provocative dance, music and poetry. Poet Ishmael Reed observes: “No contemporary writer has Ms. Shange’s uncanny gift for immersing herself within the situations and points-of-view of so many different types of women.”

The play is about the women, about who they are and what they have experienced. Although the stories these women tell are tales of struggle, the play is ultimately uplifting. The seven women grieve, but they also celebrate their lives, their vitality, their colorfulness. The talented cast of local actors are “lady in brown” – Bianca Augustine, “lady in yellow” – Sierra Demouchet, “lady in purple” – Tasha Guidry, “lady in red” – Shereka Jackson, “lady in green” – Lauren Edwards, “lady in blue” – Alana Jennings, “lady in orange” – Hannah Barker. A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer was a sleeper hit Wednesday night.  The crowd showed up at Sloppy’s Downtown in weather that only a mother would show up for.  The fourteen monologues by Susan Miller, Nickolas Kristof, Eve Ensler, Mollie Doyle and many others slayed the crowd — both the fine writing and the delivery.  The ambience complete with cool black-painted brick wall and the smells of the kitchen trying to quietly fry orders (!) added to the evening.

Don’t miss MMRP tomorrow, Saturday, Feb 10 at Central School, 7:00pm sharp.  Park in back.  Go to the main theatre — Ben Mount Theatre.  You can’t miss us.

$15, $12.50, or $10 tickets go completely to charity:  90% to our local SWLA Abolitionists and 10% to the international V-Day Project.

Then!  Thursday’s The Vagina Monologues brought in a large, really great crowd.  Cool evening.  Actors, now dressed in red, really poured heart and soul into their monologues.

Sunday’s 2:00pm matinee again features the final The Vagina Monologues directed by Bianca Augustine, her debut as a director!  The stories are poignant, funny, heart-wrenching, you name it.  All proceeds go to Oasis and V-Day Project in the same percentages.  Again, this performance is at Central School A&H Center.

We’re close to two benefit productions! Feb 7-8 & 10-11

In a first ever, IT takes its productions to Sloppy’s Downtown at 329 Broad St.  Don’t miss the two shows February 7-8 there.  Then, IT returns to Central School for the final Feb 10-11 performances.

There will be one show per night at Sloppy’s:  7:00pm, Wednesday, February 7 (A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant & A Prayer — MMRP) and 7:00pm, Thursday, February  8 (The Vagina Monologues).

Then, over the weekend IT returns to the Ben Mount Theatre of Central School, 809 Kirby St.

At Central there’s also one show per night/day:  7:00pm, Saturday, Feb 10 (MMRP) and  2:00pm, Feb 11 The Vagina Monologues.

Please know that 90% of MMRP ticket sales go to SWLA Abolitionists. And 90% of The Vagina Mono go to Oasis.  Ten percent of proceeds go to VDAY 2018, the international movement.

These are all-volunteer productions.  Thanks to our generous members for their support, and to our grants —  CVB-SWLA, A&H Council and the State of La., Division of the Arts.

Itinerant Theatre (IT) is proud to announce dates, times and locations for its benefit performances of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues, directed by Bianca Augustine, and Ms. Ensler’s edited work, A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer, directed by Joy Pace.  Cast and crew are 100% volunteer.

The two works occur on alternating nights.

A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer shows 7:00pm February 7th at Sloppy’s Downtown and 7:00pm February 10th at the Ben Mount Theatre of Central School.

The Vagina Monologues shows 7:00pm Feb. 8th at Sloppy’s Downtown and 2:00pm Feb. 10th at the Ben Mount Theatre of Central School.

Ninety percent of proceeds from ticket sales benefit local work that addresses sexual assault of women and girls, specifically, Oasis and SWLA Abolitionists; 10% benefits Ms. Ensler’s international V-Day project.

WOW – what a difficult job you all gave me – and incredibly enjoyable at the same time. What wonderful plays I have had the pleasure of reading, I wish we could choose them all. Alas, I had to go with what we felt most closely fit our season theme of “Making a Difference” and geared toward that end in the characters – though that is left to many interpretations. Thank you so very much to all of you for your submissions, your work, and your support of Itinerant Theatre, I hope you will continue to submit in future call outs, as supporting new works is a major part of our mission.

Don’t miss your chance to catch “It’s a Wonderful Life:  A Live Radio Play”!  There are two more performances, this Friday & Saturday, December 8 & 9, both at 7:00pm sharp.  Arrive early; seating is open; also, Tony James plays holiday classics on the piano from 6:30-7:00 as your special holiday pre-show.  Great fun for all ages!

Audiences have been pretty sincere in their enthusiasm for the show.  Amazing!  Astonishing!  The children were so interested in the sound effects and the very idea of being in a radio station to stage a story.

We’re getting those sorts of comments.  It’s a good thing because the cast & crew are giving it their all.

Itinerant Theatre announces upcoming production of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play by Joe Landry. Directed by Joy Pace.

It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, this beloved American holiday classic comes to captivating life with a twist, as a live 1940s radio broadcast! Our talented ensemble brings a few dozen characters and foley (reproduced everyday) sound effects to the stage. It’s a Wonderful Life is about the life of George Bailey, a generous and well-meaning man who has become too downcast and tired to continue living. Clarence, a lovable angel, must show George what life would be like if he weren’t born in order for George to have a change of heart and understand the true spirit of the holidays.

Wonderfully talented local actors include: Bianca Augustine, Hannah Barker, Julian H. Green, Jo Ann Hanks, Dan Sadler, Travis Spears, Natalie Sell, Shauna Temple, and Matt Tonkavich – with Tony James on Piano. Hello, everyone, rehearsal is far along for “It’s a Wonderful Life, a Radio Play”.  Actors and foley sound effects stars are all off-book.  But more on that later!

Please note that this production of this famous play (as a radio production) will be at the Lake Charles Little Theatre on Enterprise Blvd.

The matinee is moved to December 3 at 2:00pm.  (It was on December 10.)

Itinerant Theatre is excited to move more deeply into the 2017-18 season. Tomorrow, September 26, IT holds auditions for the clever play “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play”. The classic featuring the downcast character George Bailey in need of an angel to lift his spirits, is staged within a radio station from the mid-twentieth century.

Director Joy Pace needs 5-10 actors to fill the 25 roles. Actors, please bring with you a sample, prepared monologue — something that displays your ability to play multiple roles.

Coffee House Theatre starts up this Saturday, Sept 2 with “Caroline or Change”

Itinerant Theatre Proudly presents the opening of its 2017 season with Coffee House Theatre for September at Stellar Beans Cafe. September will be the preview of ACTS Theatre’s upcoming production of “Caroline or Change” by Lake Charles native Tony Kushner. The production will open September 15th, and you can find out about how to puchase tickets at this free preview event. Coffee House Theatre is free to the public and all are welcome.

“Caroline or Change” is set in one of the most dramatic times in America’s history, the Tony-nominated Caroline, or Change, is riveting, moving and awe-inspiring. Featuring a virtuosic score by Jeanine Tesori (Shrek The Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie), it blends blues, gospel and traditional Jewish melodies, creating a breathtaking medium for Kushner’s provocative and personal story.
In 1963, the Gellman family and their African-American maid, Caroline, live in sleepy Lake Charles, Louisiana. Caroline is drifting through life as a single mother of four working in a service job to a white family. A fragile, yet beautiful friendship develops between the young Gellman son, Noah, and Caroline. Noah’s stepmother, Rose, unable to give Caroline a raise, tells Caroline that she may keep the money that Noah leaves in his pockets. Caroline balks and refuses to take money from a child but her own children desperately need food, clothing and shoes. Outside of the laundry room, some of the greatest social advancements that the country has seen are being set in motion, and change is knocking on the door.

IT goes on Summer Hiatus

Greetings, Everyone. After our very successful May 6th Coffee House Theatre at Stellar Beans Cafe, and after our May 11th reading of feminist writings at the Art for Action! reading at Sloppy’s Downtown, IT now goes on summer hiatus. We are refueling.

Watch for the Fall 2017 season, “Making a Difference”. We will attempt to carry this theme throughout our CHT events, the Play’s the Thing series, and our December full production play at Central School’s Ben Mount Theatre. Drum roll… we’re keeping the play’s title under wraps for now, with a few exceptions…;).

For its final Coffee House Theatre for the winter-spring 2017 season, Itinerant Theatre proudly announces its four new play readings, all premiers. The plays are:

What Else Lord by Marsha Kushner – A comic scene about mother/daughter role reversal.
Return by Jim Weinzettle – A modern exploration of a “prodigal son” theme.
About the Funeral by Grace Epstein -Comic exploration in the secrets and acceptance discovered in a séance.
A Mother’s Privilege by Donna Hoke -A Mother overcoming differences to accept love and relationship.

Director Joy Pace and IT were very, very pleased with the readings of Schrodinger’s Gun by Greg Smith, Jack Pork by Donna Hoke; Kaine’s Curse by Jonathon Ward; and, Summer Storms by Jaisey Bates. Cast included: Bianca Augustine, Tony James, Jonathon Richards and Anthony Williams.

And now, IT moves on to an equally exciting staged reading of The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler, a part of V-Day Lake Charles 2017. This is a benefit production. Proceeds will go: 90% to the Oasis House and 10% to the international V-Day effort.

What are The Vagina Monologues? Hailed by The New York Times as “funny” and “poignant” and by the Daily News as “intelligent” and “courageous,” The play dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences. The play was first performed off-Broadway by Ms. Ensler.

Exciting February ~ new short plays & “Vagina Monologues”

IT has a full February calendar and is proud to bring it to the Lake Area!

On February 4th at Coffee House Theatre four new, edgy short plays will be stage read. They are among 13 chosen from 30 new 10-minute and short plays written and submitted to IT from around the USA. The plays are a varied look at many of the difficult issues pertaining to race, guns, shootings and sexual objectification (and double standards).

The actors are local — Bianca Augustine, Tony James, Joy Pace, Anthony Mitchell and Jonathon Richards. Director is Joy Pace. The event is free. Location is at co-host Stellar Beans Coffeehouse & Beanery, 319 Broad St., LC.

On February 24 & 25 at Central School “The Vagina Monologues” will be stage-read. This is part of the V-DAY 2017 Project to bring awareness to abuse of women and girls in the workplace globally.
